Goals & Guiding Principles

Goals:

1. Create active partnerships between and within groups of academics, activists, educators, mental/health professionals, policy-makers, and researchers.

2. Create space(s) dedicated to the discussion of gender.

3. Provide opportunities for professional development.

4. Advocate, facilitate, and engage in alliances for social change related to gender.

5. Increase accessibility of research and resources to build the strength of future works.

6. Bridge the gap between professional and trans and gender diverse communities through mutually symbiotic relationships.

Guiding Principles:

1. The Association for Gender Research, Education, Academia, and Activism (AGREAA) views gender as a complex system, which includes a wide range of personal and social identities, expressions, and histories. AGREAA recognizes that there is limited language to represent these nuanced complexities and continually seeks inclusive terminology that respects and values gender diversity. AGREAA also believes that all personal identities, expressions, and histories are significant, and does not that values any individual or group’s gendered experience or identity over another.

2. AGREAA acknowledges multiple oppressions which effect trans and gender-diverse communities, and advocates for related dialogues and increased consciousness. AGREAA is committed to allocating resources towards addressing these issues.

3. Through AGREAA’s commitment to diversity, we promote supportive environments for all marginalized gendered communities, including both dominant and subjugated gender identities and practices. AGREAA stands in solidarity with those who work against gender and sexuality based oppressions.

4. AGREAA believes that gender-based research, academia, activism and professional work
are strongly connected, and supports multidisciplinary collaboration through a variety of means; including community dialogue and community informed research practices.

5. AGREAA recognizes that research and academia related to trans, gender diverse and other marginalized gender identities and practices takes place in various fields of study, and therefore embraces multidisciplinary perspectives to further our understanding of gender.

6. AGREAA believes that the inter-connectivity of social justice and progressive causes is imperative to the collective success of these movements. As such, AGREAA is dedicated to engaging in ongoing work, both internal and external, to this end.
